Justin James was a man of few words during post match interviews at the Volvik World Long Drive Championship. The no.3 player in the world woke up after realizing he won the championship belt that’s awarded to winners. After defeating Mitch Grassing in the finals, James went bananas after his winning drive.
He grabbed the belt, ran with it, dropped, and then leaped like a cat into the stands, where he embraced hugs with his family. During his post match interview with Golf Channel’s Jerry Foltz, he had a lot more to say than previously as the sigh of relief consumed him. He was so ecstatic, he gave a shout out to his “super hot wife” as she looked in slight embarrassment.
There’s no doubt Justin James is the happiest man in the world. To go from being all business to becoming the “Snapping Turtle” (his nickname) shows that inner excitement. He didn’t have to do much either, as Grassing, unfortunately never kept his shot in the grid on all eight tries. WIth four balls to go, James was the mailman, and he delivered the package, with a moon shot that soared over 420 yards.
If there’s one way, to end a long drive competition, that’s one way to do it. On the women’s side, Sandra Carlborg captured her fifth title, becoming only the second long driver ever to accomplish this (the great Jason Zuback is the other). She made a case for becoming the greatest long driver of all-time.
Well played you two, and nice celebration Mr. James.

How hard is Wes Patterson swinging?
— Golf Channel (@GolfChannel) September 6, 2017
The golfers in the world of Long Drive are something special to watch. Sure, there are some haters out there, but the effortless power and the unique swings make it quite the spectacle.
Wes Patterson, who has shocked everyone by upsetting the two best long drivers in the world in Maurice Allen and Ryan Reisbeck in the Volvik World Long Drive Championship. He also has a beautiful swing, but that artistic swing shattered his club into two, hitting a fan.
The fan is fine and may have gotten a little souvenir. So the unranked Patterson has already had his share of highlights.
He also seems to be one of, if not the nicest guy in long drive which is saying a lot, because most of those guys and girls are very respectful and humble despite their intimidating nature. Golf fans may have a new fan favorite in Patterson, but let’s just hope that the next time a club snaps, that it doesn’t fly into the crowd.
That was a close one. Phew.

If you don’t know who Maurice Allen is, then you’re missing out. He’s one of the best long drivers in the world, in particular, dominating on the European Tour, and enjoying some recent success in the U.S.
Allen won the Mile High Shootout, defeating then world no.1 Ryan Reisbeck, but before that, during an interview on NBC/Golf Channel, he did one of the best celebrations ever. He replicated what Ric Flair used to do during his wrestling days, and as we know, Flair was one of wrestling’s most hyped characters.
Probably the funniest thing of all is, the man himself, Ric Flair replied to NBC/Golf Channel’s tweet with is famous “WOOO!”.

We’ve seen some exciting characters in golf over the years, and immedietely, one name that comes to mind is Seve Ballesteros, who arguably was the most expressive golfer in history. Maurice Allen just took over that title as golf’s most expressive character.
Although it’s not traditional golf, it’s still a great golf related event. You still use golf balls and clubs, you’re just not aiming for a hole.
Other than his animated nature, Allen is just a joy to watch, with an explosive swing. You and I would likely swing out of our shoes, trying to replicate his swing.
The Florida A&M alum looks to continue his success as we get closer to the Volvik World Long Drive Championship. Well played Maurice, keep doing you.
You can follow me on Twitter @ChiGolfRadio! I go Super Saiyan on my backswing but only end up hitting it 150 yards!
