Paul Azinger replaces Greg Norman as Fox golf analyst

Shortly after Fox Sports fires Greg Norman as its lead golf analyst, they hired 2008 Ryder Cup winning captain Paul Azinger to their team.

Azinger, who has also won 12 PGA Tour tournaments including the 1993 PGA Championship was an analyst working alongside six-time major champion, Nick Faldo for ABC before he landed a gig with ESPN, where he has been until now. With ESPN, Azinger was teamed up with Mike Tirico during the Masters broadcasts for the Thursday and Friday rounds among other things.

Mark Loomis, producer at Fox, was working with ABC back in 2004 and hired Azinger to be an analyst along with Faldo and Tirico before ABC lost they’re rights to the PGA Tour. So now, with Loomis’ connection with Azinger, made it an easy hire in the end for Fox.

Here’s a statement from Fox Sports on the hire:

“Paul is a respected and trusted voice in the golf community, and he has the credibility of being a major champion with a strong track record of experience in the broadcast booth,” said Fox Sports’ executive producer John Entz. “He has been one of golf’s most candid and thoughtful analysts and we are excited to add him to our team.”

Azinger will be broadcasting the U.S. Open, U.S. Senior Open, U.S. Amateur and U.S. Women’s Open along with Joe Buck during the 2016 season.

“I am honored to partner with FOX Sports and the USGA to provide analysis for the compelling slate of USGA Championships,” Azinger said. “It will especially be an honor to call our nations national championship, the U.S. Open, beginning in June at storied Oakmont Country Club.”

2016 will be Azinger’s 11th year broadcasting golf tournaments.

Dustin Johnson Suspended for Doing Cocaine, Had Sexual Affairs With PGA Wives

Hyundai Tournament of Champions - Final Round

Uh Ohhh! This is quite a series of events in a very short amount of time. First Dustin Johnson announced that he was taking a leave of absence from the PGA Tour to deal with “personal issues” and now it came out according to that he was leaving to seek help for a problem he had with cocaine. The PGA Tour ended up suspending him for six months for doing such substance. DJ has been in trouble before with drug use as he was suspended for marijuana use in 2009, cocaine in 2012, and once again in 2014.

In 2012 and 2014, the years he did the cocaine, he had his strongest major finishes as a pro, finishing tied for 9th at the Open Championship in 2012 and finishing tied for 4th at the U.S. Open this year in 2014 (Which was his best U.S. Open finish). Maybe Dustin needs to play “White Lines” by the Sugar Hill Gang which talks about cocaine and the troubles of it. Here’s his statement courtesy of

“I will use this time to seek professional help for personal challenges I have faced,” he said in a statement issued by his management company. “By committing the time and resources necessary to improve my mental health, physical well-being and emotional foundation, I am confident that I will be better equipped to fulfill my potential and become a consistent champion.”

Dustin’s agent David Winkle, when asked if Dustin would be suspended, texted a Sports Illustrated reporter saying “Don’t believe everything you hear”. Well, Mr. Winkle, I appreciate your efforts of defending your client and all but…he did just get suspended sooo what do you think about that? Dustin will miss the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup this year which are clearly the biggest events left on the schedule.

The PGA Tour made a short statement on the situation, courtesy of Golf Channel:

“We have nothing to add to Dustin’s statement. But wish him well and look forward to his return to the PGA Tour in the future.”

Thought that was enough? Well wait! There’s more! According to DeadSpin, Dj has been having sexual relationships with a couple of PGA Tour wives. Or “At least one”. Sounds like two or three to me! Here’s a small paragraph mentioning this in’s piece:

Johnson’s conduct has long been a topic of conversation among close observers of the Tour. He is often seen in bars near his home in Jupiter, Fla., and is also known to have had a sexual indiscretion with at least one wife of a PGA Tour player.

And Robert Lusetich verified that it was indeed two wives he was messing around with:

Kinda makes you wonder who the women were. Who were their husbands? Popular players? Not so popular? Caddy(HUH?!)? It’s anybody’s guess but this is quite an interesting series of events.

Robert Lusetich had some more to say via his Twitter:

Shane Bacon of Yahoo Sports threw some humor into the situation and I so happen to agree with him:

He also had some warm thoughts as well:

And so do I. I hope nothing but the best for DJ and I think he made a very smart move of leaving golf to deal with these problems because most would just continue doing it instead of getting help. It makes you wonder though, he’s a wealthy PGA Tour golfer (Net Worth of $20 million), he’s one of the longest hitters on Tour, a very popular player, he’s with a woman that most men would love to date and he gets free travel to tournaments. He’s living the dream. He’s living a life that most people could only dream of and he’s using substances that most people use when they’re stressed or depressed to get away from reality.

There’s absolutely no reason why Dustin should be doing this stuff. If he was in certain situations like unfortunately some are, his body would be full of cocaine due to depression. He’s doing this with a wonderful life. I’m glad he made the right decision to seek out help because who knows how far this problem could have went if he just played it off. Get it together DJ! Drugs and having affairs with married women is NOT what life is all about. Take as much time off as you want because this is much bigger than golf.

UPDATE: New statement from the PGA Tour says Dustin Johnson is NOT suspended:

“With regard to media reports that Dustin Johnson has been been suspended by the PGA TOUR, this is to clarify that Mr. Johnson has taken a voluntary leave of absence and is not under a suspension from the PGA TOUR,”

Holly Sonders, No Longer With Golf Channel, Moves to Fox Sports

Golf journalism superstar Holly Sonders has turned down a contract extension with Golf Channel to join Fox Sports according to GolfWeek. It is expected that she would be a part of Fox Sports new USGA coverage as well as doing some reporting on NFL Sundays. Ever since joining the popular Morning Drive show back in 2011, she became a very popular figure on Golf Channel. She’s reached over 100,000 Twitter followers making her one of the most followed golf journalists on the social media site.

“we didn’t come to terms,” according to a spokesman.

“We wish her the best in her future endeavors,” he said, declining further comment according to

She has been a pressence on NBC’s popular golf network because of her looks as well as her ability to play the game which she showcases in such shows as “Playing Lessons With The Pros” and “School of Golf”.

So who’ll replace her? It’s anybody’s guess at this point, it wouldn’t surprise me if Golf Channel is scrambling for another woman to replace Sonders. Kelly Tilghman, who is extremely versatile might even be a possibility as dudes do love her looks too although she has a “boyish” voice.

Martin Kaymer Goes Wire to Wire-to-Win U.S. Open Championship

Martin Kaymer put up one of the most dominant displays in golf history, winning the 114th U.S. Open Championship by an impressive eight strokes. Rickie Fowler and Erik Compton were runner ups while Keegan Bradley, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, and Henrik Stenson all finished tied for fourth. Martin put on a fabulous display of power, accuracy, and putting on American golf’s biggest stage while breaking the U.S. Open 36 hole record going into the weekend. He and Bernhard Langer are the only Germans to win multiple majors in their careers and Martin is still only 29 years old. He’s also the seventh international player to win the U.S. Open in the last 10 years showing the world’s dominance on North America’s biggest stage.

He also joins Michael Campbell and the iconic Payne Stewart to win a U.S. Open at Pinehurst. He shot an eye-opening 65 on Thursday and Friday and was just four shots short of the all-time U.S. Open record while being just eight shots shy of the all-time record for ANY major. There were talks of him being the worst world no.1 in golf history but that is false as he now has a PGA Championship, Players Championship and U.S. Open under his belt and is taking his career to unbelievable heights. He’s already made a name for himself on the European Tour and now he’s quickly making a name for himself in the States. There’s no doubt, his late mother, who passed away from skin cancer is looking down on him everywhere he goes and Martin is making her very very proud. Here are the highlights of the U.S. Open including Martin’s tournament clinching putt.

Also, this was the last U.S. Open NBC would cover as they will hand the mics and tech equipment over to Fox Sports. Thank you for all of the memories NBC, you helped bring the Open to life and hope nothing but the best going forward. Also, a shout out to Mark Rolfing who I had the pleasure of meeting, he’s a terrific reporter, a great guy and is very under rated in this business. He also got a great quote out of Erik Compton who had suffer heart problems in the past and managed to overcome it all and finish runner-up at the U.S. Open and now earned an invite to The Masters in 2015: “I’ve never gotten this far along in my story. It really hasn’t sunk in yet.” said Compton courtesy of NBC will still cover big events such as the Ryder Cup and will still Golf Channel in their name. Looking forward to the Fox coverage. Should be very interesting that’s for sure.

Sam Snead’s items sell for over $500,000 at auction

Via the Examiner

Via the Examiner

Wow, it’s amazing how much of an impact the great Sam Snead still has on golf fans around of the world. During an auction in Dallas, some of “Slammin Sammy’s” most valuable possessions were sold at whopping prices which is a rarity for golf items according to the Examiner. It was reported that his 1949 Masters trophy was the highest selling item getting sold for $143,000 while his 1969 Ryder Cup came in a close second selling for $131,000. The intriguing thing about the 1949 Masters trophy is that it was the PGA Tour all-time wins leader’s first Masters victory. Other things that were sold at the auction were Sammy’s 1946 British Open medal and his 1949 PGA Championship Wanamaker trophy both selling at $101,575 each. There were also over 3,000 signed personal checks of the golf legend as well that sold for $34,058 and finally, his sand wedge that was used to beat the great Ben Hogan that famous 1954 Masters playoff which was sold for $26,290.

So it shows that the dude with arguably the greatest looking swing in golf history can compete with other big value items at auctions. It’s hard to see any sports memorabilia let alone golf memorabilia go up against expensive art pieces and antiques of sorts. I love Sam Snead although sadly I never got to see him play as I am way too young but I know all of the amazing things he’s done and I know he truly was one of the greats of the game. It’s great to see his items go for such demand as to me it’s like a sense of respect because they know how great he was and they know how valuable his trophies are. Simply amazing and let’s hope that the fine folks that won the bids on these items takes great care of them to honor one of the greatest athletes who ever lived.

John Daly promotes ad on Twitter with funny coupon code name

John Daly posted on Twitter one of the funnier promotion codes around for golf company Polara Golf. Now, I’m not sure if it was John’s idea or Polara Golf’s but either way it’s still pretty funny. The only thing I’ll probably say is that the code is obviously Christmas related and that it has to do with the dude in the red coat and the beard known as Mr. Santa Clause. I’ll shut up and let the code in the tweet speak for itself.

What makes this code funny is because obviously it says “JD is Santa” and because it makes him sound like a God, almost as if he’s saying “JD is God”. I couldn’t but crack a library like giggle after reading it. Sure, it’s not hilarious by any means but it’s enough to crack a little smile for the holidays. Nice job JD!

Tiger Woods on breaking Arnold Palmer’s Masters record: “I’m not going to play that long”, is Woods not passionate anymore?

[twitter-follow username=”ChiGolfRadio” scheme=”dark”]

In 2004, golf legend, fan favorite and golf’s “cool guy” Arnold Palmer extended the record for most consecutive Masters tournaments being played in. He made it to his 50th straight Masters tournament that year and couple of years prior, broke the record that was previously held by another golf legend in two-time major winner Doug Ford. Tiger Woods, who is a four-time Masters champion and is probably known best for his performances at the Masters than any other tournament has said that he doesn’t want to play in 51 consecutive Masters.

“I’m not going to beat Arnold’s record. I’m not playing that long, that’s for sure.” Woods said according to

“For me, I always want to win so if I can’t win, why tee it up? That’s just my own personal belief. And I know what it takes to prepare to win and what it takes to go out there and get the job done, and there’s going to become a point in time where I just can’t do it anymore. We all as athletes face that moment. I’m a ways from that moment in my sport, but when that day happens, I’ll make a decision and that’s it.” Woods said again according to

I agree with him on part of that. Of course winning is the most important thing in golf and that’s the goal especially in a prestigious tournament such as the Masters. However, why would he not go for it considering the shape he’s in? Also, sometimes winning doesn’t matter if you don’t have the passion for the sport you’re playing. I mean, if he was truly passionate you’d think he’d try to make it to every Masters possible until his body gives in obviously. Yes, he has the passion of winning and that’s great but you want to play because you love playing the game too. That’s what life’s all about and I think King Arnold Palmer was a perfect example of that. So, this leaves the one question. Is Tiger Woods truly passionate about the sport that’s given one of the most successful careers we’ve ever seen in any type of job in the world?

I may be going too far but you’d think you’d love the game enough to try to make it to as many Masters tournaments as possible am I wrong? And the shape that Woods is in, he should be able to make it to plenty of Masters tournaments. It would be awhile yet before he ties or breaks that record but if the passion is there then it can happen. I’m not saying he should set it up as a goal but I would think automatically he would keep going to the Masters every year unless he has an injury that affects his career. What do you guys think? I’m kind of on a balance beam right now. You guys think he’s truly passionate or did he just reveal something that tells us that he’s not? Let me know in the comments section as always!

WATCH: PGA Tour player hits golf balls while in traffic

[twitter-follow username=”ChiGolfRadio” scheme=”dark”]

So, what do you do when there’s a ton of traffic (If you live in Chicago then you would know!) on the roads? Hit golf balls of course! That’s exactly what soon to be PGA Tour rookie John Peterson did while in traffic on the I-20 in Texas. I’ll let the videos speak for themselves, oh and did I mention it was at least 21 degrees outside? No? Well, I just did, here’s the videos courtesy of Golf Digest!

I bet the people in the cars were probably like “What in the world does he think he’s doing?!” “Wh- why is he pulling out that golf club!?!?” “What do you think you’re going to do with that?!”. All kidding aside, I think I already like this young rookie who has a very good-looking golf swing. I appreciate the fact that he’ll hit shots no matter where he is. Back in my old neighborhood, I used to go out to the elementary school around the block in at least 20 to 30 degree weather to hit golf balls with my 7-iron and pitching wedge. I had to use yellow balls of course because there was ton of snow since you know, Chicago is known as like, Alaska’s sister or something.

It can be one of the coldest places on earth or it can be really hot, take your pick! Yes, I was wearing a puffy looking coat so it was harder to swing but I went at it anyway and it wasn’t really that bad. So that leaves me with this question for you guys. Have you ever hit golf balls in the snow? If so, tell me all about it, I’d love to hear it! I love getting the community involved so I really would enjoy hearing your thoughts! John, keep doing you buddy, looking forward to seeing you out on the course during the new PGA Tour season!

Guess Where Dustin Johnson Was on Sunday?

DJ and Paulina at the AMA's, thanks to CBS Sports for the pic!

DJ and Paulina at the AMA’s, thanks to CBS Sports for the pic!

On the golf course! No, for real though, he and his fiance that all the guys drool over (Paulina Gretzky) were at the AMA’s last night as Paulina presented the award for Favorite Male R&B/Soul artist which went to Justin Timberlake who spotted Dustin Johnson in the crowd and performed a pretend golf swing on stage according to Now, I didn’t see the AMA’s because honestly I don’t really care. I was watching football as my Chicago Bears played the Rams (Sadly ending in a loss) and then I listened to the Patriots vs Broncos game on the radio and I was also on here writing because I love doing it and I love the fact that you guys read the work and share your thoughts! Anyway, it was good to see that DJ and his girl had a good time because sometimes, Tour life can be a grind but then again seeing someone like Miley Cyrus on stage could be a stressful sight to the human eye (hope she gets her act together) so maybe it’s still a grind but other than that it’s a nice night out and a chance to spend time with the lady. Could his relationship with Paulina effect his play on the course? Because I’m sure she’s one of those spoiled rich daughters that runs with a rich athlete.

I mean, she’s the daughter of arguably the greatest hockey player of all-time so you know she has to be spoiled, you can’t say that she isn’t a little. I mean, I’m sure she’s nice and all but you know she’s walking with her nose in the air a little bit. I mean, the pictures she takes, the random popularity she’s gotten, that tan she has (Why do white people get tan anyway? No offense, I love you guys!), etc and sometimes a spoiled girl can effect one’s job but only time will tell. I’m not trying to be rude but sometimes that’s the case you know? So, what do you think? Did you see DJ and Paulina at the AMA’s on Sunday Funday? Was it a shock to see her present an award or did you already know she was going to do so? On a golf note, do you think there relationship could effect DJ on the course or do you think it’s no big deal? Let me know in the comments as always!
