Charles Barkley has been hovering around the golf world lately as he sometimes does with his world famous (And ugly) golf swing. First, within the last couple of weeks, the Round Mound of Rebound was seen hitting a tee shot one-handed which actually looked better than his traditional swing. Now, he told Mike Missanlei of 97.5 The Fanatic in Philly that he and Tiger Woods “aren’t friends anymore”. Charles has made many friends throughout his career both as a terrific basketball player and his current gig as a broadcaster and Tiger Woods has been one of those good friends ever since he got into the sport of golf. The big reason for this broken friendship is because Charles believes that Tiger hasn’t been social enough and thinks he focuses too much of his energy on golf and Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major titles.
“I think that when you’re as great as he has been, and this probably is a negative at some point, like he was so consumed with being the greatest golfer ever, he wasn’t a very sociable guy. Even when was a friend of mine, he wasn’t a very sociable guy. He just had a one-track mind. He just wanted to break Jack Nicklaus’ record.” Sir Charles said according to the Washington Post
“Golf is just a game,” Barkley said. “Your life don’t stink … But I think when you put yourself in that situation where your whole life revolves around how you’re doing on a golf course, you’re gonna develop a negative attitude to a certain degree, instead of saying, ‘I’ve actually got it pretty good.’ It’s like people who say I never won a championship. I understand that. I accept that. But it ain’t like I’m sitting around saying, ‘Oh my God, my life stinks. This is so miserable.’ ”
Some very interesting words from the basketball legend. Personally, I’m not totally an outgoing guy. I don’t drink or anything at all. however, I will talk to people and have good conversations depending on the topic. Like, I can talk sports all day and I can talk about hip hop a good deal as well. If I’m talking about those things then you probably would think I’m an outgoing, expressive personality but I’m not totally outgoing and I’m at best, unpredictable but am also quite chill. From what I can tell with Tiger, he apparently is too focused to talk anything else but golf and I guess he’s been stressing out over breaking Jack’s record. I could talk golf all day, but I’m not going to stress because I’ll likely never win a Pulitzer Prize for my goofy style of writing.
There’s no doubt that Tiger’s life is one that most people dream of and he should be appreciative of that. I understand he wants the record but sometimes you have to kick back, put a smile on, and be thankful where you are in life and Tiger isn’t even 40 yet. Tiger has to realize that even if he never reaches 18, his legacy is still saved. Some will say he’s better than Jack was despite being four majors short of the goal. He doesn’t need to loosen up, or get expressive or anything like that because not everyone is like that BUT there’s no reason to stress over the terrific life you have and the unbelievable legacy you already have. As long as you love what you do, nothing else should matter, even if you feel like you never reached the goal that you wanted. After all, what’s the point of living miserably when everything is so beautiful? Legacy is great, but can never overtake passion. Jot that down in your notes kids!
