You’re Not Going to Believe How Many Fans Were at the Phoenix Open on Saturday

Look at that thing! The 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale

As we know, the Phoenix Open is the tournament that has the king of crowds in golf and has been a hot spot for a long time (literally). The obvious attraction and one of the best holes in all of golf, the par-3 16th stadium hole looks just like…well, a stadium and has been a proud notification that the sport of golf which many consider boring (You’re crazy dawg), can have some of the best crowds in sports. Well, guess what the attendance was on Saturday’s round? 189,722. That’s right, 189,722 according to PGATour.com courtesy of GolfRumours.com. That’s a Tour record for attendance and you it’s very possible that can get topped next year with all of the loaded talent on today’s PGA Tour. Arizona State Sun Devil fans have been a huge reason why the attendance has been so great at the Phoenix Open over the years especially at the famous 16th hole. The atmosphere at the 16th hole has long been described as a college football atmosphere and it is and with the corny celebrations the golfers do, it just adds to how great that hole is.

I guess the question is, where does TPC Scottsdale or maybe even just the 16th hole alone rank as one of the loudest venues in all of sports? Obviously, it wouldn’t be a top 10 choice especially when you got the Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs stadiums as well as a lot of the loud college stadiums like Oregon football’s Autzen Stadium or Duke basketball’s Cameron Indoor Stadium but there’s no doubt in my mind that it deserves to be a top 50 at worst. I’d bump it up to top 20 (Maybe 19 or 18th) even because when that place is loud, it’s LOUD. Augusta National can have some loud crowds itself but TPC Scottsdale’s crowds make Augusta’s look like there’s no crowd at all so you know how loud that is. Oh, and if a player hits a hole in one on the 16th then you can forget about it, you won’t even be able to hear yourself think. Loud crowds are a huge reason that we love sports and for a venue like Scottsdale to bring all of that excitement to golf is just oh so sweet. If you have any memories or anything you want to discuss about the Phoenix Open and the legendary TPC Scottsdale, then please leave a comment or shoot me an email at colinm5598@yahoo.com!
