Tiger Woods Might Be Focused More on Money Than Prestige as He is Urged to ‘Respect’ the WGC-HSBC Champions
The WGC-HSBC Champions tournament has been quite a popular one and golf’s biggest star hasn’t played in the event in a couple of years. Instead, Tiger Woods has decided to play in exhibitions that offered solid payouts. HSBC’s sponsorship chief has urged Woods to respect the bank’s large investment in the tournament and play the event this year instead of “meaningless money-making opportunities”. HSBC’s global head of sponsorship Giles Morgan said that the bank had “had words” with the different golf tours about impressing on players the importance of appearing at the sport’s biggest events according to Yahoo Sports.
“I do think the tours — and I think the tours are working on this — should make sure that there is respect to the tournaments,” Morgan said in an interview in Singapore according to Yahoo Sports.
“As opposed to playing in meaningless… money-making opportunities around the World Golf Championships (WGC).”
Morgan also added: “It’s up to the tours to enforce the criteria to their membership. And we’ve expressed our position to the tours, which is that we know they can’t enforce their players to play and that’s fine, we understand that.
“But we do think that players need to be respectful of… these major events (which) are really at the top and the pinnacle and the lifeblood of the sport.”
So, this situation feels like it can go both ways. Yes, it’s kind of disrespectful to not play in a golf tournament that people work hard to put together but at the same time, the golfers can do whatever they want. HSBC gets plenty of golfers to their tournament but I understand that this is Tiger Woods we’re talking about and the more Woods is in the tournament, the more boost the tournament gets. The question is, why hasn’t Woods been playing in this tournament? Is it a money issue? Because if it truly is then that’s a shame on Woods’ part since the man just earned over a billion dollars for his career. However, could it be a greed thing on HSBC”s part as well? Or do they really want more players to play to help bring more fans to the event? The tournament is already highly popular but I guess I can kind of see the frustration from Morgan.
I’d too be wondering why a player of Woods caliber would play in any other tournament but mine but not in a selfish way but in a sense of “Man, am I doing something wrong with this tournament?”. Mr. Morgan should probably chill out though I mean, Woods is only one golfer out of the several that join the tournament plus, the HSBC Champions is still one of the bigger tournaments in the world so he should just let it go. Besides, it’s only been a two-year absence so I don’t really see the big deal but it can honestly go both ways considering Woods was taking part in supposedly “meaningless opportunities”. Again, if Woods was missing out on the HSBC because of money and nothing else then he should be very ashamed of himself as he is easily one of the richest people on earth. So, what do you guys think? Is Tiger Woods losing respect for the HSBC Champions? Is Giles Morgan over reacting to the situation? Maybe Morgan’s comments are kind of knock to the players who are committed to the event? Who knows, but please leave your comments below on this situation!

In case you missed it, Jason Day defeated Victor Dubuisson at the extremely popular Accenture Match Play and it was Victor who practically stole the show despite losing to the very talented Jason. Victor hit two sick shots that gave him two great par saves. Here’s the video, courtesy of GolfDigest.com.

It’s Black History Month for at least another week so I feel that it’s time for a tribute. African-Americans built this great country and built some of the country’s greatest inventions and on the golf side of things, an African-American man created one of the most important little tools in the sport. The tee. The little object that helps us take that first important swing on each hole. George Franklin Grant invented the tee back in the 1800’s and was also Harvard’s first ever black professor as well as a Boston dentist. Some speculate that George was not the inventor of the tee and that nobody really knows who invented it but he’s widely regarded as the true inventor and created the wooden tee. However, the man I want to talk about is the man who is one of the greatest golfers of all-time and the greatest black golfer in history not named Tiger Woods. This man is Calvin Peete.
Calvin was born in Detroit, Michigan and showed up on the PGA Tour in 1975 and had a very solid career winning 13 tournaments, 12 of them on the PGA Tour and one on the Japan Tour. He also has had an impressive showing in the majors with 23 cuts made, 13 top 25s four top 10s, three top 5s and placed 3rd one time at the 1982 PGA Championship. He was also in the top 10 in the World Golf Rankings for several weeks during his tenure. He is also known as one of the best players in the 80’s as he won an impressive four tournaments in one year in 1982 when he went on a tear and even won two tournaments by a whopping seven strokes and was the same year he nearly won the PGA Championship. His 1982 performance is one of the most dominant performances in a single year by a player in the history of the game and if he won the PGA Championship then that would have really been something.
He is also without a doubt, one of the greatest, if not, the greatest control player in PGA Tour history with an astonishing 10 straight years of leading the PGA Tour in fairways hit. Most Tour pros learn the game at a very young age, but not Calvin. Calvin picked up the game at the age of 23 and never looked back. Before he got into the game, Calvin simply thought it was a sport for retired rich white dudes that liked smacking little white balls around like a lot of us (Including myself) thought before we fell in love with the sport. He had a horrible accident at his grandma’s house when he was 12 years old when he attempted to climb a cherry tree and grabbed a branch that eventually broke causing to fall and break his let elbow and that has to be one of the worst injuries because it feels so awkward and weird when you hit your elbow and that’s why it’s called the “funny bone”.
Although he did get surgery on the elbow, it just wasn’t the same however it very well could have been a huge part to his smooth swing and accuracy. Legendary golf coach Butch Harmon once said of Calvin’s swing, “Calvin had beautiful rhythm and tempo, and because his elbow was fused he was able to create a swing path that allowed him to return the club to the same position at impact.”. Since wasn’t a power hitter much at all and since the injured elbow actually helped him become one of the most accurate hitters in golf history, one has to wonder. If he didn’t injure his elbow, could he have become a power hitter on Tour and not be as accurate? It’s very possible that he could have been one of the best power hitters on Tour but I don’t think it would be on the caliber of his accuracy because he was out of his mind when it came to nailing fairways. Probably, the most heart breaking part of his story is when his mother dropped him off at her mother’s house and only visited him once before she never returned again.
I mean, imagine never seeing your mom again after she only visited you once? Despite that, Calvin went through with his life with his grandmother until the golf God’s gave him a gift at the magical age of 23 when he learned the game when he played on the public course at Genesee Valley Park in Rochester, New York where he was peddling goods to migrant workers. Calvin’s greatest victory came at the Players Championship in 1985 and interestingly enough, he won the tournament while dealing with Tourette’s syndrome which causes the mind to view things in opposite directions and apparently, Calvin had this syndrome his whole life and started to get to him more later in his golf career.”It was like my right became my left and my ups became my downs,” said Peete. “When I was playing golf, I’d think ‘fade’ and then hook the ball.” So, what did he do to fight off this issue? Reverse psychology of course! The result helped him win what many today consider golf’s fifth major at the Players.
Johnny Miller once noted that “He and Curtis Strange were the best golfers in America in the 80’s”. The one thing that I really love about Calvin is that he tries to get many kids in black communities to get into the sport and I absolutely love that because the one thing that golf definitely needs is diversity and that’s what’s really going to help bring the whole world into this great sport. So, let this be a reminder of a time where there was a black man who dominated a mostly white man sport and drove the ball with pure accuracy down any fairway in the world and although he had challenges to face growing up, he overcame it all to have a wonderful career on the PGA Tour and any black golfer that steps on the course today will walk the fairways and there will be a shadow, and that shadow would be of the legendary Calvin Peete. Calvin and his wife Pepper reside in Jacksonville, Florida where Pepper is the manager of The First Tee of Jacksonville.

A few days ago, to celebrate Sports Illustrated’s 50th anniversary issue of its popular swimsuit edition, Golf Digest compiled some of the best bikini golf photos anywhere (Male and female) with some of the game’s most beautiful women including Amanda Dufner, Lauren Thompson of Golf Channel, and others but there was one that seem to catch the attention rather quickly. In the picture you’re about to see below (Hold your horses), Michelle Wie looks like she’s skinny dipping in the water that you see. Yes, she’s wearing a bikini but it seems like there’s no top. The only thing I can say is that maybe the water is magical and it makes it look like she’s “top naked” (See what I did there?). As we know, Michelle Wie is a very popular, very talented and very beautiful woman so this is almost like the holy grail of sexy golf pictures considering her huge popularity and familiarity. This picture is of total respect to an awesome LPGA Tour golfer and a great woman and not to be rude. Let’s always remember that we have major respect for all of these women! So, on that note, here you go and thanks to Golf Digest for showing it off!

PHOTO: Natalie Gulbis Shows Off Her Talent, Booty and Surroundings in This Beautiful Instagram Picture
Natalie Gulbis is at it again as she hits Instagram to show off her paddle boarding skills while being surrounded by some gorgeous scenery. For those of you who want to stare at her butt, there’s that too. What raises my eyebrows is the fact that she’s balancing so well on that board (Unless she fell right after the picture was taken). Unless that board is very good at handling water, that has to be a tough thing to do. DAT BALANCE! So, what amazes you most about this picture? The surroundings? The way she’s handling the board? Or simply her booty? Either way, Nats is a pretty lucky chick to be in that gorgeous location. JEALOUS! Come on y’all, we’re all going together! Who’s with me?

Wow, how good can it get for this gentleman? He’s already enjoying a college hoops game (I love college basketball) at a legendary school, and then he nails a massive 95 foot putt to win a BRAND NEW CAR (In radio promoter voice)! Did I mention that it was a $15,000 car? Yup, it’s the truth homie. My best assumption is that they had the contest because of Jason Dufner who had a successful golf career at Auburn. Either that or they just love their golf over at Auburn which is awesome!
Speaking of YouTube, congratulations to YouTube for becoming the second most popular website in the world (Behind Google)!

LPGA Tour superstar Natalie Gulbis always seems like she’s staying busy both on and off the course and on Wednesday, it was no exception as she played a game that’s the combination of both golf and baseball that’s simply called “Golf Ball”. She played the sport with kids at Saddleback Valley Christian School and from what I see, it looks like traditional baseball except the players use clubs instead of bats and a big ball that’s on the ground instead of a baseball that’s getting pitched to them.
It looks like a lot of fun but just don’t let guys like John Daly or Bubba Watson play! They’d hit a home run every time! Just like footgolf (The combination of soccer and golf), golf ball looks like a very fun sport especially when you’re hitting. One of the things that definitely makes look awesome is the fact that you’re going to hit the ball every time even if it results in an out. Way to go Nats! Good choice of sport for the kids to enjoy!

PHOTOS: Augusta National’s Magnolia Lane Covered in Snow and Ice Due to Snow Storm but it’s Actually Quite an Amazing Sight
Augusta National is known for its awe-inspiring beauty that has influenced the lives of many golfers and fans for years and this year shouldn’t be any different. Magnolia Lane has long been the famous entry way to the most recognized clubhouse in all of golf and Magnolia has been around long before the Masters began in 1934 (Back then, it was the Augusta Invitational). However, on Thursday, there were some interesting pictures of this great road that were taken on Twitter by Kevin Faigle, Scott Michaux of the Augusta Chronicle, and the Weather Channel.

Weather Channel had some pretty amazing photos. One of a street in Augusta, GA effected by the snow storm and then another one shooting right down legendary Magnolia Lane through the fence.

Also, here’s another picture from back in January that’s absolutely gorgeous.
What makes this picture gorgeous is that it looks like the sun is shining on the sign as it sits in a winter wonderland.
So, what do you think of these pics? Perfect golf weather isn’t it? Let’s start the Masters RIGHT NOW. Come one everyone, let’s make a Facebook campaign to have the Masters tournament played right now with all the snow and ice! You know you want to! *nudge nudge*
Or…you could just wait until…spring.
The most important thing of course is to make sure everyone’s OK after the storm.

Well then, I know how this happens, especially to an all-around player who’s likely going to be a hall of famer. According to Kyle Porter of CBS Sports, defending U.S. Open champion Justin Rose who has been sidelined for a few months, injured his shoulder….by throwing a golf ball to his caddie. HIS CADDIE! Can you believe it? No, the real obvious highlight is that he injured himself throwing one of the lightest balls in the world although it’s arguably the most dangerous ball to get hit with because yes, it’s harder than a baseball and a hockey puck. But, J-Rose threw the ball so it wasn’t like he got hit with it. I’m as dumbfounded as you are on this one, tilting my head in confusion as how you can injure your shoulder throwing something so light. Maybe his caddie was all the way on the other side of the globe and Justin decided to chuck it as far as he could, messing up his shoulder. Of course, as awesome as Justin is, he played through the injury like a boss.
“I played pretty much from October last year with it not perfect. I assumed a little bit of rest over Christmas would heal it, but it didn’t really and that’s when I knew I needed to put a little bit of extra time into it – but nothing serious, nothing torn, no surgery required, nothing like that.” Rose said according to CBS Sports
it’s just one of those awkward moments I guess but the injury wasn’t too bad obviously if he played through it. It was just amazing that someone like that got hurt by throwing something so small and light. Again, it’s not like he’s just a small ball guy, he’s an all-around player which makes him dangerous. Anyway, all the best for J-Rose and remember guys, if something like this happens, always blame it on the caddy. Even if it isn’t golf related, blame some random guy’s caddy anyway. Even if you aren’t near a golf course, blame it on a caddy. Also, Alex Miceli of GolfWeek has more on the Rose injury.
